A good salmonella status (also known as salmonella category) is crucial for every pig farmer. The IKB Varken quality mark even mandates testing for salmonella infections. Salmonella has many downsides and can lead to significant consequences for your pigs. Therefore, it is essential to keep the salmonella status under control for optimal farm performance.
Salmonella is an intestinal bacterium that causes the disease Salmonellosis. Pigs are often infected orally by ingesting contaminated manure from other animals through their feed. Contact with a contaminated environment, materials, or drinking water can also be causes of infection. Symptoms in pigs can include fever, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. The danger on farms is that salmonella can cause animal losses, and if the meat is rejected due to contamination, the farmer loses income.
To determine the salmonella category on a farm, a blood test can be conducted. Based on laboratory results, the farm can assess its salmonella category. The level of antibodies against salmonella in the blood serum, expressed as an OD value, indicates the infection level. A higher OD value means a higher quantity of antibodies against Salmonella. Every trimester, your farm receives a score. Based on the sum of these values, farms are divided into three categories. The lower the category, the lower the risk and the better the situation. If you are in a higher category, you need to reduce your salmonella status. Below is a table explaining the three different categories.
Values |
Salmonella category |
20% or less of blood results with an OD% higher than OD40 |
Score 1 |
More than 20% and less than 40% of blood results with an OD% higher than OD40 |
Score 2 |
40% or more of blood results with an OD% higher than OD40 |
Score 3 |
