Fresh drinking water of good quality is vital for chickens. Chickens drink a lot, this can be as much as 250 ml per day. So it is important that clean water is always available. Clear water is not necessarily clean drinking water, as bacteria cannot be seen with the naked eye. Because you are not always aware of this, it is therefore good to regularly take a water sample from the drinking nipple and test your drinking water.
With drinking water for chickens and other poultry, there are a number of problems that occur regularly. As biofilm gets into the pipe, the drinking nipple slowly slips shut and creates pathogens in the drinking water. Biofilm is a slimy deposit of bacteria, fungi and nutrients. This builds up in pipes and settles here. Flushing pipes makes little sense; often this only displaces the problem. Loose bacteria and fungi end up in the drinking water, and this can make the animal sick. Clogging of pipes or nipple tubes by this slimy layer can also occur. The surfaces thus hold even more dirt, and this affects the poultry.
To remove biofilm, these microorganisms (e.g., bacteria, fungi, yeasts) must be eliminated. Elimination is done by adding a disinfectant to the water. However, conventional disinfectants are harmful to you, your animals and the environment. At Watter, we disinfect sustainably with an agent that is friendly to humans, animals and the environment. And because you produce the agent on site with our system from water, salt and electricity, operational costs are very low!
