A hotbed of bacteria: biofilm
Biofilm, a slime layer formed by micro-organisms, is a problem in livestock because it adheres to pipes and surfaces. When water flows through these pipes, pathogens can enter the water. This can cause disease in your herd, so it is important to keep pipes at watering points clean.
However, flushing pipes clean is not enough. Rinsing clean only moves the microorganisms in the biofilm to your drinking trough. Here, these microorganisms can then re-attach to the soil, and spread through the drinking water. This makes the drinking water a source of bacteria. To prevent this, proper disinfection is important.
How do I get clean drinking water?
Disinfectants are often used to remove biofilm from pipes and drinking points. Traditional options such as hydrogen peroxide are effective, but harmful to the health of your animals, yourself and the environment.
